As part of the narrative: As the floods are rising around the church Archer sketches his ideas for how to depict variations on the tower that is located opposite.

This picture shows depicts many types of tower as The Tower of Babel by Pieter Brueghal is one of my favourite pictures. As a parable it tells the story of how a man once commissioned the building of a tower so tall that he could look down on earth from the same position as God.

As a result of this blasphemous ambition God destroyed the tower and made all its builders speak unknown languages so that they could not organise themselves to get up to such mischief ever again.

Why "Ziggurats" as a title? Ziggurats is a term given to pyramidal ancient monumental buildings, such as in Egypt and South America.
