The X-ray Church

"X-Ray Church." 2002
Relief etching.
36cm by 31cm
Paper: Hahnemule
Edition of 50.

As part of the narrative: After witnessing the death of the two horses Archer retreats to a church where he sets about painting on its walls all he has seen. Outside the riding flood waters begin to lap at the entrance to the building.

There are two seperate plates printed on one piece of paper. The left hand plate depicts the outside of the church which is surrounded by dense forest. The waves are beginning to crash against the entrance to the building.

The right hand side of the print depicts the inside of the church as a cutaway. Archer is perched on a stepladder which rests atop some scaffolding. He is drawing a picture of the Tower of Babel. On the floor infront of the scaffolding sits a printing press. All around the church are scattered bits of paper, notebooks, paint pots and paint brushes.
